General service tank cars are used to transport a wide variety of liquid and solid materials, both hazardous and non-hazardous. Although they are classified as DOT-111 “Non pressure” by the U.S. Department of Transportation, general service tank cars are equipped with pressure relief devices that protect against excess internal pressure as well as prevent a vacuum from forming within the tank. These 52’6” steel side gondolas are carrying a much different load than we typically see; a very interesting load of hay!  The Baltimore & Ohio gondolas, series 352000-354899 were built between 1957-1960.  They are classed as 0-65, and have Bettendorf trucks.  This 70 ton Southern gondola is series 314000-314299.  It was built in 1958 at one of Pullman Standard’s plants, and has Bettendorf trucks.
